Determining if the timing is right to expand globally is a serious undertaking. Ideally, the company’s business plan would have defined this as a future objective which would have implications for the culture of the company and also the design of the products and services. That is, the products and services would have been designed with the “international hooks” that would allow for an easier products and services international offering. The first and most important consideration is to garner a companywide commitment. This commitment will not only be with the executive / senior management team, but also permeate throughout manufacturing, customer service, purchasing and shipping. The key objective for this first step is to interview all of the senior executive team and other relevant management. The output of these interviews will provide the gaps where additional training may be required. This will also provide a key input into the decision as to when a company should seriously consider their first international expansion program. It will also provide a key input into step 2 – required corporate structure to support the company’s international goals.
